   Thats too bad.  I myself depend on the PHP GD routines for dynamic plots
   and such.

   At some point, the admins will have to upgrade or something - perhaps the
   subject can be broached again with them at that point.  In the meantime, 
   what are your needs for graphics - are they truely dynamic, or can you
   pre-prepare the images and then do static display afterwards?  I ask, 
   because a friend here at BNL simply runs php as a compiler to pre-generate
   html files (which are then served on an antiquated http server that he
   can't upgrade - in fact, he does a whole html directory tree with one 
   makefile).   Would that help you out?  (build your own copy of php and
   keep it in your local ~/bin, and pregenerate image files, using chron
   and or make, etc?)  I know its a clunky solution, but it might get you 
   by until the real upgrade.
